Below is a list of past Oso Vista Ranch Project initiatives.

  • Broadband Initiative (Telemedicine / Distance Learning / Economic Development): A project in partnership with Sacred Wind Communications to deploy affordable, scalable broadband (minimum 100 Mbps) to the Ramah Navajo Community via a USDA Community Connect Grant. Key milestones include application submission in May 2014, anticipated award announcements in late 2014, and projected completion in late 2015.

  • Blue Corn Project (Positive Cultural Identity / Suicide Reduction / Economic Development): An intergenerational agribusiness initiative partnering with Joseph Jaramillo (Native Naturals at Isleta Pueblo) to mentor Ramah Navajo women and girls in growing, harvesting, processing, and packaging blue corn. Supported by a USDA Small Business Development Grant to establish a local processing plant.

  • Youth Development – Youth Summer Program and Camps (Positive Cultural Identity / Suicide Reduction / School Retention): A Monday-through-Friday summer program (running during June and July) along with two 5-day summer camps held at the Oso Vista Ranch Youth Leadership Camp and Hogan. Integrates elder wisdom, challenge course activities, traditional tracking, fire starting, and life skills. Future sustainability includes an exchange camp concept with youth from Santa Barbara, California.

  • Multi-Unit Housing Smoke-Free Policy & Youth Coalition Project: A campaign to establish a Northwestern New Mexico youth coalition aimed at eliminating secondhand smoke in affordable multi-unit housing and advocating for tribal and state policy change. Key timeline targets include public awareness and initial leader recruitment by January 31, 2012, an initial large-group youth leader meeting in January 2013, follow-up meetings throughout 2013, and multi-unit housing policy change projected for year two.

  • Native Youth for Community Empowerment Collaborative: A youth-led initiative established to organize action against the daily effects of poverty and work toward poverty reduction in the local community.

  • Commercial Tobacco Counter-Marketing Campaign: A youth-driven public health campaign creating and disseminating posters, photographs, and slogans across participating communities and schools to counter commercial tobacco use.

  • Commercial Tobacco Prevention and Traditional Tobacco Education Programs: Multi-year educational and cessation initiatives facilitated for youth and adults across Ramah Navajo, Zuni, and surrounding communities, partnering with organizations such as TUPAC and the NM Department of Indian Affairs. Operated across six years leading up to the document’s proposal.

  • HUD Housing Counseling & Federal Financial Literacy Education Programs: Programs administered as a HUD-certified Housing Counseling Center to provide financial wellness and financial literacy education. Recognized with the HomeFree USA Affiliate of the Year award in 2011.Â
